Cypriot cuisine is one of the great pleasures of a stay in Oroklini. Mediterranean flavours, generous portions, and a tradition of hospitality mean you'll eat extraordinarily well — whether at a village taverna or cooking at home with fresh local ingredients.
The Cypriot Meze
A meze isn't a meal — it's an event. Typically 10 to 30 small dishes served over a leisurely 2–3 hours, a traditional Cypriot meze includes dips (hummus, tahini, taramosalata), grilled halloumi, village sausage, stuffed vine leaves, grilled meats, and fresh salads. It's designed for sharing and conversation, and it's the quintessential Cypriot dining experience. Expect to pay around €18–25 per person for a full meze.
Essential Dishes to Try
- Halloumi — Cyprus's famous cheese, grilled until golden. Try it for breakfast with watermelon in summer.
- Souvlaki — Skewered and grilled pork or chicken, served in pitta with salad and tzatziki. The everyday fast food of Cyprus.
- Sheftalia — Handmade lamb-and-pork sausages wrapped in caul fat, chargrilled. Unique to Cyprus.
- Kleftiko — Slow-baked lamb sealed in a clay oven for hours until it falls off the bone. A Sunday tradition.
- Moussaka — Layered aubergine, minced meat, and bechamel sauce, baked golden.
- Loukoumades — Crispy honey-drenched doughnut balls. The perfect dessert.
Seafood
Being on the coast, Larnaca has excellent fresh seafood. Grilled sea bream, calamari, octopus, and prawns feature on most waterfront menus. The fish restaurants along Finikoudes promenade are reliable, and for something more authentic, seek out the small tavernas in the fishing harbour area near Mackenzie.
Wine: Commandaria
Cyprus's most famous wine is Commandaria — a sweet dessert wine produced in the Troodos foothills since the 12th century, making it the world's oldest named wine still in production. You'll find it on every restaurant menu. For dry wines, look for local varieties like Xynisteri (white) and Maratheftiko (red).
