Nicosia old town

Nicosia Day Trip

Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the capital of Cyprus and the last divided capital city in the world. Just 50 minutes from Oroklini Beach House, it offers a completely different experience from the coast — ancient walls, narrow streets, museums, and a living border that tells the story of Cyprus's complex history.

The Walled Old City

The heart of Nicosia is enclosed within 16th-century Venetian walls, complete with heart-shaped bastions. Inside, a maze of narrow streets, restored stone buildings, and hidden courtyards create an atmospheric walking experience. The old city is compact enough to explore on foot in a few hours.

Ledra Street & the Green Line

Ledra Street is the main pedestrian shopping street running through the old city. At its northern end, you'll reach the Ledra Street checkpoint — a crossing point on the UN-patrolled Green Line that has divided Nicosia since 1974. You can cross to the northern side with just your passport for a fascinating contrast: different architecture, Turkish street food, and the grand Selimiye Mosque (originally a Gothic cathedral). It's one of the most unique experiences in Europe.

Museums

The Leventis Municipal Museum tells the story of Nicosia from antiquity to the present, with beautifully curated exhibits — and it's free. The Shacolas Tower Observatory on Ledra Street offers a 360-degree view of the city including the buffer zone. For art lovers, the Cyprus Museum on Museum Street houses the island's finest archaeological collection.

Shopping & Culture

Beyond the old city, Nicosia has modern shopping areas, particularly along Makarios Avenue and at The Mall of Cyprus. But the real charm is in the old city's boutiques, craft shops, and the lively Phaneromeni area where traditional workshops sit alongside trendy cafes and galleries.

Getting There

From Oroklini, take the A2 motorway north — it's 56 km (about 50 minutes). Park outside the old city walls (there are several car parks near the Famagusta Gate) and explore on foot. Consider going mid-week to avoid weekend crowds.
