Paphos harbour and castle

Paphos Day Trip

Paphos is one of Cyprus's most rewarding day trips — a UNESCO World Heritage city where Greek mythology, Roman mosaics, medieval castles, and turquoise beaches all come together. It's about a 2-hour drive from Oroklini Beach House along the A1 and A6 motorways, making it an ideal full-day excursion.

Paphos Castle & Harbour

The medieval castle at the edge of Paphos harbour is the city's most iconic landmark. Originally built as a Byzantine fort, it was rebuilt by the Lusignans and later used by the Ottomans as a prison. Today you can climb to the rooftop for panoramic views over the harbour, the sea, and the town. The harbour itself is lined with restaurants and fishing boats — a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch overlooking the water.

Paphos Archaeological Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological parks in the eastern Mediterranean. The star attractions are the remarkably well-preserved Roman floor mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus — dating back to the 2nd century AD. Allow at least 2 hours to explore the site and bring water and sun protection, as there's limited shade.

Tombs of the Kings

Despite their name, these underground tombs weren't built for royalty — they were carved from solid rock for high-ranking officials during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (3rd century BC onwards). The site is hauntingly beautiful, with Doric columns, carved chambers, and open courtyards cut deep into the limestone. It's one of the most atmospheric historic sites in Cyprus and is open daily.

Coral Bay Beach

About 12 km north of Paphos, Coral Bay is widely regarded as one of the best beaches in western Cyprus. A horseshoe-shaped bay with soft golden sand, crystal-clear shallow water, and excellent facilities including sunbeds, water sports, and beachside restaurants. It's ideal for families and makes a perfect afternoon stop after a morning of sightseeing.

Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

On the coast road between Paphos and Limassol, this dramatic sea stack is where the goddess Aphrodite is said to have risen from the sea foam. Whether or not you believe the legend, the scenery is stunning — towering white cliffs, turquoise water, and the iconic rock formation. There's a viewpoint and car park above the beach. Visit in the late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds.

Getting There

From Oroklini, take the A1 motorway west toward Limassol, then continue on the A6 to Paphos — it's about 160 km (approximately 2 hours). The motorway is well-maintained and toll-free. A suggested itinerary: Tombs of the Kings in the morning, the Archaeological Park and harbour for lunch, Coral Bay in the afternoon, and a stop at Aphrodite's Rock on the drive back.
